Effect of Plant Growth Regulators on the Anthocyanin Synthesis of Perilla ocymoides L

Abstract
Effects of plant growth regulators such as ABA, ethephon, GA©ý, uniconazole on anthocyanin synthesis, PAL activity and ethylene production of Perilla ocymoides L. were investigated. The characteristic purple-red pigment of red perilla was identified as cyanidin. Anthocyanin synthesis was slightly promoted by ABA and ethephon treatment, and uniconazole in creased significantly. GA©ý was found to have inhibitory effect on anthocyanin synthesis, but this was retarded by uniconazole treatment. PAL activity was promoted by ABA treatment and inhibited by GA©ý treatment. PAL activity by ethephon and uniconazole treatment was shown different according to the temperature. Generally, anthocyanin synthesis and PAL activity were shown to have close physiological relationship. Though there is some difference according to plant growth regulators, these results suggested that ethylene production may play a role in promoting PAL induction in association with the anthocyanin synthesis.
